san francisco surprise

Going into this past weekend, Stefan and I had no plans.  I imagined us falling into our usual routine: dinner out Friday, sleeping in Saturday, run, farmer's market, drinks out with friends, sleep in Sunday, misc to-dos, cooking and movie at home Sunday night.

Maybe it was the glorious sun that surprised us Saturday or the fact that Stefan was headed off to a Bachelor week with his best friend on Monday or the feeling of our fleeting time in this city (or on this planet in general), but we decided to shake it up a bit - exploring a bunch of new places we had never discovered before.

Post picking up a package in South San Francisco Saturday afternoon, we made a spontaneous stop in Portero Hill.  We strolled around the adorable (and very hilly) streets eyeing the plethora of eccentric ethnic restaurants before deciding to have a 4pm meal at Chez Maman: fresh vegetable crepes and mixed greens.

Sunday afternoon the same: we hopped in our car with the top down and cruised around town until we found someplace worth stopping for.  Fortunately, our luck landed us at a very special spot.

Hiking up to see where exactly we'd ended up

Why on top of the world, of course!

No just Twin Peaks, but almost as gorgeous!

We even stumbled upon a wedding -
can you see him in white and her in black there in the corner?

more hiking

and some jumping

and a whole lotta wind

and then some exploration
back down into the woods

But what kind of Stefan-and-KK adventure would this be if it didn't include a little cheese?  Thankfully, our journey ended with some coffee and more exploration in Cole Valley, which of course included a trip to the local cheesemonger: Say Cheese.

It's amazing to me how easy it is to fall into the same routine - running the same route, eating at the same spots, visiting the same sites - when there is so, so much on this planet to discover and experience and explore.  This weekend was a healthy reminder that it's so, so worth the extra effort (and bit of uncomfortableness) in trying something new.
